Rashford was not on show against The Exiles, with “illness” offered up as the official excuse for his absence. The England international forward also missed training last Friday, with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag admitting that there is an “internal matter” to be resolved.

That is because Rashford was spotted at Belfast nightclubs on Wednesday and Thursday last week, as he visited close friend Ro-Shaun Williams in Northern Ireland, and punishment could now be on the cards. That could take the form of a fine, with Newport supporters asking if those funds could be passed in their direction.

Rashford has been short on form this season, after hitting a personal-best 30 goals in 2022-23, and needs to start convincing Ten Hag of his worth as he seeks to avoid being subjected to the same treatment as England colleague Jadon Sancho – who was frozen out at Old Trafford before leaving for a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.
